Guilt

Pathogenic beliefs often have a basis in unconscious guilt, which in turn is rooted human altruistic tendencies. A person may become inhibited in pursing a life goal through the pathogenic belief that achievement of the goal will disturb his relationship with his loved ones in ways that harm them. Inhibition in this case will take the form of unconscious guilt.
